THE HISTORY IN EUROPE
In the early 80s, a Swiss company,
Geilinger Ltd.. decided to use the energy crisis of the 70s as an opportunity
to develop new building products to lower the energy costs. As a result, a new
window and facade technology was developed, with a revolutionary U-value at that
time for the glazing of U= 0.6 W/m2K and to avoid heat bridges. Professor Dr.
Bruno Keller was involved in this development and took over the management responsibility
for its implementation and marketing. The whole concept relies on an extremely
good building shell combined with adapted HVAC systems. Professor Dr. Bruno Keller
applied for a patent and registered it in August 1984. Number of the patent of
invention: EP 0177657 A1
THE HISTORY IN CHINA
Visiting China in 1998/99, Prof. Dr. B Keller saw how much is going on in construction but on a low level of
quality of the building envelope and consequently with the old fashioned American
way of air-conditioning, being very unhealthy for people, very uncomfortable
due to draught and noise and needing a tremendous amount of energy for heating
as well as for cooling. Shanghai and many other large cities sooner or later
will thus run in a supply problem for energy. (Picture6-) For doing construction
better, he invited Dr.Tian Yuan to come to Switzerland and to learn the new
technologies and to transfer them later to China.
And in the same time KT also got a task to help China to build high comfort
and low energy buildings from the AGS-Switzerland, the Swiss part of the Alliance
for Global Sustainability (www.globalsustainability.org) The Alliance for Global
Sustainability (AGS) is a unique, international partnership between four of
the world's leading science and technology universities:
- Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Zurich (ETHZ)
- Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)
- University of Tokyo (UT)
- Chalmers University of Technology (Chalmers)
Created in 1997, the AGS today brings together hundreds of university scientists,
engineers, and social scientists to address the complex issues that lie at the
intersection of environmental, economic and social goals. Together, we seek
to meet these challenges through: Improving scientific understanding of global
environmental challenges; Development of technology and policy tools to help
societies reconcile ecological and economic concerns; and Education of a new
generation of leaders committed to meet the challenges of sustainable development.
Dr. TY and Prof. Dr. B. Keller
published the new technology in the Chinese Journal of Architecture* and subsequently
were invited to give a presentation at the “New Housing Forum” in Shanghai
in 2000. They realized, Chinese construction people being very much focused
on to the old and worn out American way of operating a house and waiting for
a high tech solution of all problems. They took the opportunity to tell the
audience clearly, America, the US to be about 30 years behind European technology
for high comfort and low energy buildings. Contrary to the US, Europe was forced
to learn and has learned a lot between 1980 and 2000, it has failed with many
technologies but now it knows what works well and the new technologies developed
by Prof. Dr. B Keller and others belong to the best in the world.
